The bar employers are setting continues to rise as AI vacuums up the entry-level tasks juniors were once given. Employers are putting judgement, communication, initiative and real-world readiness at the top of their must-have lists. While employers don’t yet know how AI will change their needs, the ones who keep building pathways in will secure and foster the best of the next generation.
Here's what employers need to do to win the best young talent in 2026:
1. Build the experience you're asking for
Give students the real-world experience you want them to have. As AI takes over more of the tasks, create internships and paid entry-level roles to get them ready for work.
2. Be straight about AI
Juniors are anxious about AI, so tell them plainly what AI means for their role, what you're hiring for now, and where the growth actually is.
3. Hire for judgement, not just the resume
The candidates worth betting on are the ones who can question AI output, not just produce it. That matters more than a perfect CV now.
4. Make your process part of the pitch
You can say all the right things about culture and growth, but how you hire people says just as much. Keep candidates in the loop, move quickly, and don't let silence do the talking.
5. Respect the hustle
If a candidate has a side hustle, ask what they built, what they learned, what broke. That's often where the real initiative shows up, and it deserves the same weight as anything else on their resume.
