Forget ping-pong tables and Friday drinks. In 2025, young Australians want something far more fundamental: security.

We’re living in an AI-fuelled, cost-of-living-crunched world where career paths feel less predictable than ever. Against that backdrop, Gen Z and Millennials are laser-focused on two things: growth and stability. Our Hotlist survey of nearly 2,000 young professionals shows that these two drivers sit at the heart of their career decisions.

Growth is the #1 non-negotiable

The top thing young Australians want in their next role? Clear opportunities to learn and progress. Salary matters, yes, but it’s not enough. If you’re not actively showing candidates how they’ll develop, you’ll lose them. Career pathways aren’t perks anymore - they’re table stakes.

Security in a world of instability

This generation isn’t job-hopping as much as stereotypes suggest. They want stability paired with transparent pay and respectful processes. Vague job ads and ghosting erode trust fast.

Connection matters

Despite the rise of AI and remote tools, young professionals crave human connection. Hybrid is the clear preference - most want to split time between office and home, not go fully remote. They want collaboration, mentorship, and culture they can actually feel.

Culture as a decision-maker

Women in particular weigh flexibility and diversity more heavily when making career choices. An inclusive culture with real commitments, not token gestures, makes all the difference.

The takeaway? If you want to win with the next gen in 2025, focus less on shiny perks and more on the basics: visible career growth, real security, respect in hiring, and cultures that back up the talk.
