Westpac is Australia’s first bank and oldest company. Today, it’s one of the ‘big 4’ banking organisations in the country. As an industry leader, Westpac is constantly innovating across an exciting range of projects to ensure their success.
“We have trialled Hatch and are now converts to not only what it is trying to do - accessing young, ambitious, diverse and capable minds - but also the manner in which it is done, with easy, clear and compliant onboarding.”

How did they use Hatch?
Westpac piloted Hatch primarily in the Business Bank with strong success, delivering immediate business value through new skills and perspectives. They hired 58 Hatch interns for roles including Junior Developers, Analysts, Marketers, and Designers.
They posted engaging Hatch roles to attract the right talent
Westpac used Hatch roles to target early career people, who were flexible for each for each team’s needs. Roles ranged from part-time to full-time, and placements could last for 1 month through to 12 months. They brought their Hatch roles to life using rich content including team videos.
They hired for diverse skills and motivation
Managers in Tech, Marketing, Design and Operations successfully hired Hatch interns with the skills needed to boost their projects. They also had a better sense of candidate motivation before the interview stage by watching intro videos like this one from Hatch candidate, Michelle, for a Product Manager role.

They let Hatch handle the employment admin and payroll
Westpac decided to use the optional ‘Hire with Hatch’ service, where Hatch acted as the legal employer for interns and took care of admin and payroll. This meant that managers didn’t have to worry about headcount, and could simply hire their interns and start work as soon as possible.
“Hatch is a great opportunity to get real, tangible and meaningful experience... It would be especially positive for students like myself who are not yet eligible for formal internship programs. I think it’s good for students who are looking to explore what they want to do, with a good set of existing skills that they want to refine.”
- Michelle Lei, Junior Product Manager at Westpac
The better and human way to hire
Westpac found that Hatch interns delivered immediate business value through new skills and fresh perspectives. Many interns made such an impact that more than 50% of placements have been extended or converted to full-time positions. Today, Westpac continues to use Hatch interns across the business.
